What is the difference between wireless AP and router?

Nowadays, people’s lives have become increasingly inseparable from the network. It is precisely because of the diverse needs of people that promote the prosperity of wireless networks, and the provision of wireless networks also requires wireless network equipment, such as AP and wireless router. The concept and function of AP and router are different, and more importantly, their application scenarios are also different. Let’s see below.

1. Different concepts

The first difference between AP and router is in concept. AP is an access point of wireless network. AP can only be used to connect local area network and has no internet access function. It can only connect to internal network or connect devices through wired network and send signals to other network devices. Routers are mainly used to facilitate users to access the Internet and realize the full coverage of wireless networks. Routers are a device that can connect both the LAN and the Internet.

2. Different functions

AP is the communication bridge between wireless network and wired network. Through AP, the range of wireless network can be expanded. As long as the AP is placed in the center of the client, users can be covered in the range of wireless network, so AP can be equivalent to the switch between the network and users. The function of the router is mainly to realize the sharing of the home wireless network, ensure the normal of the home network to a certain extent, and realize the full coverage of the wireless network, thus further completing the data exchange.

3. Different applications

AP can be widely used in hotels, enterprises and other places. AP can meet the requirements of enterprises for firewalls, so the coverage area is very wide. Routers are mainly used in homes, while the coverage area of homes is relatively small. It is precisely because of the different applications, the management of routers is also more convenient.

For example, Ruijie’s multi-service cloud architecture core router RG-RSR77-XA-08 is the latest high-end distributed router, which is mainly used in the network of government, education and some major enterprises, and can realize the convergence of multiple data at the edge.

To sum up, the difference between AP and router is mainly reflected in the concept, function and application. AP is an access point to connect the network, while router is mainly used in the home. Now you should be able to clearly distinguish the two. The coverage of the two is the biggest difference, and the coverage of AP is more extensive.
